Co-Music Director Sophy Morley

Sophy and her eight siblings all received a solid foundation in piano and music theory, with many going on to play other instruments. Sophy studied music theory and piano and successfully completed HSC (now VCE) level in piano performance, continuing to receive tuition through her university years.

During her secondary schooling Sophy began playing the organ, first for chapel services at her college and then for Sunday worship, weddings and funerals at her parish and at other churches and venues across the region.

On completion of her studies, Sophy returned to the Latrobe Valley to pursue her career as a medical scientist and she resumed her participation in church and choral music. Sophy has been the director of her local church choir for 25 years and a member of the Royal School of Church Music and Gippsland committee member for over 15 years.

In her professional work for the Catholic Diocese of Sale over the past decade, she has been the accompanist and assistant for the Lavalla Catholic College Senior and Junior Choirs, and a pipe organist, cantor and Director of Music for significant Diocesan celebrations.

Sophy joined the Yallourn Madrigal Singers in 2002 and became Assistant Director of Music in 2007. Sophy has enjoyed opportunities to accompany and conduct the Madrigals on various occasions, for choral items in their Annual Feasts at Gaztronomy Restaurant and particularly in December 2011 at joint Christmas concerts with the Latrobe Chorale at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Morwell and with the Latrobe and Francis Orchestras at Narkoojee Winery, Glengarry. An experienced musician and singer, Sophy enjoys listening to and performing a wide range of music. She feels blessed to be given the gift of music and could not imagine life without it.
